Such a Silly Spring
Posted By FarmerJ on March 25, 2011
We thought we’d share with you a glimpse of the sunny spring day we had here at the Farmstead! All week long, I’d been noticing the grass quickly turning green ~ which equates to mowing again…very soon. Then, like someone flipping a switch on, it started snowing last night around 11:00 p.m.
This is what we woke up to this morning. Just two days ago, there were tornado watches in effect about 45 miles east of here. That’s just crazy. That’s just Nebraska.
The birds were still chirping and chattering, like they had been all week, but their tone was a little different this morning. Mine, too. I was hopeful this snowfall would delay the need to mow a little, but I don’t think it will. It warmed up to a nice 40 degrees, and all but slim traces of this snow are already gone.
It was a pleasant evening. While I was preparing dinner, Darling Husbie and I were having a typical discussion ~ one centered around turbo chargers and head gaskets ~ when all of a sudden he exclaims, “What the heck?!” I had to scurry over to the doors to see. A flock of wild turkeys had decided to venture across the field. Way cool! Be sure to click on these photos to enlarge them so you can get a better view.
We’ve had several critters navigate through the Farmstead ~ umpteen deer, coyotes, a badger, raccoons, possums, a woodchuck, rabbits…everywhere a rabbit, even a snapping turtle ~ but, never a wild turkey. Let alone a posse of 18 of them! There were two toms that were proudly displaying their tails. I watched through the binoculars as long as I could…er…until I got dizzy.
I didn’t crop this photo, because I wanted to give you a better perspective of where they were. Darling Husbie is at the slough behind the shop ~ basically, almost straight to the right of the tractor in the first photo above ~ and he’s got the camera zoomed in as far as it would. They were probably about 50 yards or so south of our northerly property line.
Oh, yeah. For those of you who are wondering what is going on with the alfalfa field…as Husbie says, we’re getting out of the hay business. We’re gettin’ corny. It’s time to switch crops for the sake of the ground, and Husbie’s been working on plowing the alfalfa under, as his day job and the weather permit. Between those two things, the plowing has been slow going. But, fairly soon, the field will be planted with field corn. Be sure to stay tuned for photo updates of that!
We’re once again participating in Farm Friend Friday, so be sure to venture on over there to check out some other great farmsteading blogs.
Happy…spring? ♥

I just love your blog. It’s delightful to read!! What a snow you got!! Spring is silly sometimes
Love the wild turkeys. I always feel so privileged when they come for a visit here. Enjoy getting corny
LOL Thanks for sharing with FFF!
Thank you for such kind comments, Amy, and for visiting! My friend, Laura over at Ten Things Farm told me about your wonderful blog and FFF. I am so glad she did, as I have thoroughly enjoyed reading about the others.
Thanks, again, and may your blessings be abundant!
I’m not sure what FFF means…must be a code? There are wild turkeys here…but not the kind that you can shoot and eat! There are alot of vultures, but I don’t think that I would want to roast one of them…well, maybe…
I’m not sure where the Blue Kettle is right now…not my turn! It’s time for someone else to cook something!
We live in a silly world…no matter what season it may be!
I love you…many, many hugs back to you!
Silly Mom, FFF means Farm Friend Friday. It’s what we participate in on Fridays ~ a group of bloggers ‘meet up’ at Amy’s Verde Farm blog and post links to our own blogs. That way, fellow farmsteading bloggers have a fun resource to get to know each other and read about each other’s lives ‘on the farm.’ You should follow the link from my posts sometime. Amy’s blog is beautiful, and quite fascinating with stories about their Verde Farm ~ and there are so many others, too!
Crazy weather! I love the turkeys. I see quite a few around here. Good luck with your corn.
Thank you for visiting, Teresa! I hope you return soon.
Now that is a lot of snow for a Spring Day. I am more excited over the turkeys. Did you know your Buddie Spark Plug can call turkeys? Yep, I have a talent that I forgot to mention to you. So, if I was there, and Husbie said ” Look, ” I would have walked out to the deck, moved my hands over my mouth, right after saying to him, “I bet you 20 bucks I can call them and they would answer” and made my call and they would have answered.
Dangit, I missed my shot at 20 bucks…….
Trust me when I say I can call turkeys and they answer. Ask Hubbie or Treyman!
Squeeeeeeeee! Now, why does that not surprise me one bit about you?! Heehee! You have to pinky swear you’ll give me a turkey call the next time we’re together. I’ve gotta hear it! Heehee!
I told Husbie my buddy said she could call turkeys and they answer her. He just grinned, shook his head, and said “Spark Plug.” Heehee! You’ll have to show him, too. I wonder if it would work the same with peacocks? There are peacocks behind the Arizona house. Heehee! Nah, probably not.
I love ya, Buddy.
