Quilted Oven Mitts
Posted By FarmerJ on March 11, 2011
Now that she’s received these, I can share them with you! I do apologize for the poorly contrasting background ~ I was working on a limited time schedule. At least that’s my story.
I am so thankful I have one of the most patient mothers in the world, and likely the most forgiving! Mom’s birthday was nearly a month ago, and she received her gift package a good three weeks late. Well, not good, but you know what I mean. Mom’s one of those gals who pretty much has all the ‘stuff’ she needs, but she just loves to get packages filled with eclectic odds and ends. Truly a woman after my own heart. Or, would I be the woman after her own heart, since I’m the daughter? Oh, well, never mind that.
Figuring it had been several years since Mom had purchased herself a new set of oven mitts, I thought I’d whip her up a pair for fun. Now, truth be told ~ because I’m all about honesty ~ she was supposed to have received these as her Christmas gift! So, in reality, Mom was being even more patient than she realized. And, yet, she loves me. At least she tells me she does.
The photo above is depicting the pieces of one mitt. Each mitt contains four pieces of Warm and Natural quilt batting and two pieces of fabric, of course. I’d already layered two pieces of the batting together by the time I thought to snap the picture.
Here, I’ve got the batting ‘quilted’ to the fabric. Promise me you won’t look too closely, or else you’ll see that I am still unable to sew in a straight line, despite there being lines for me to follow. I never could keep my coloring within the lines, either.
The next step was to sew a little ‘collar’ across the top of each mitt piece to give it a finished edge. Then, I created a little loop with a piece of matching scrap fabric and pinned it in place. An attempt was made to sew a 1/4″ seam around the mitt with right sides together, reinforcing the area at the top and where the loop was positioned. Then, it was a mere matter of turning the mitt right side out.
Now, here’s another thing I know about my mother. I knew she would open her gift, adore it, and hang it somewhere to be admired in the days to come. Never to be used as oven mitts, but rather as wall hangings. So, I had to pack her an excuse to actually use those mitts. I made her up a batch of my favorite cornbread mix and included it in her box.
A sneaky attempt to get back on Mom’s good side after being three weeks…er…months late with her gift? Perhaps, but I’m not admitting to anything! ♥
We’re participating in Farm Friend Friday, so if you have some time to spare, venture on over there to check out some other inspiring farmstead blogs.

These are beautiful and I’m sure she loved them. My mother would hang them on the wall too
Great idea with the cornbread though. Thank you for sharing this with Farm Friend Friday. Happy Weekend, Amy
Adorable! (I would resist using them too because they are so stinkin’ cute!!) Straight line sewing is overrated – it’s all about character!
Great job, Dearie!
Thank you, Ladies! The oven mitts were a fun little project, despite it taking me so long to allocate the time for them. I don’t know why I ever thought I’d have more time to sew during the winter as opposed to summer when gardening is going full speed ahead. It just hasn’t happened!
Thanks for stopping by, and I love ya for leaving me a comment so I know you did.
Aren’t mothers wonderful? The mitts look amazing!
There you go again!!! Bring tears to my eyes…you definitely are sooo very precious to me…I did know there was a lot of love and time in those mitts! And yes, you are right…they are hanging on the wall for all to see…we did make the cornbread, but used very old, worn out holders to remove it from the oven!
Oh, my! What a beautiful new look on my Blog…you surely found the blue kettle! And the border is absolutely perfect…just wish I were so creative…maybe some day I will learn from the very BEST!
I will go for now, this machine, as I call it has been down for a while…going back to my blog and see what happens! I love you!
Do I see a pair coming my way in a buddie box one day? h int hint
Well, I was actually picking your brain about oven mitts a while back. Remember? Heehee! What style you prefer, whether you have some for the Egg, etc. You just never know…
I love ya, Buddy!
Yes, I do remember you picking my small mind, during our many hours speaking blah blah blah blah…. I think I would like some for the house, so that I could wear my so pretty apron that you made me. Do you have enough material left from the apron for matching mittens? Now that would be so special…
Love ya Buddieeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Awwwww, now matching mitts would be adorable, wouldn’t they?! Hmmmm…I don’t think I’ve got enough fabric left to make two of them. Maybe one, if I can get creative and do some sort of patchwork pattern. Perhaps if I incorporate another complimenting color…
…hmmmm…let me see what I can come up with. And, hopefully you won’t end up waiting for four months for yours like Mom did…lest I just deliver them to you in person on a whim!
Love you, too, Buddy!
