Jack Frost Is Knocking!
Posted By FarmerJ on October 4, 2009
There’s another change of seasons at the Farmstead, and it seems to be changing rather quickly. The colors are beautiful and as refreshing as the brisk morning air. The header photo depicts our view as we look west toward the front slough. The maple trees have changed to their vibrant reds, while the cottonwood and mulberry trees are turning more gradually.
We’ve had a few mornings of frost already. We scurried to gather the last of the crops in the garden ~ okra, tomatoes, green-eyed peas, watermelons, and the delectable Boston Marrow, Spaghetti and Butternut squash. Oh, and the sweet potatoes. There are still a few green-eyed peas on the vines, but I’m leaving them out just a little while longer to dry a little more.
This past week has been quite chilly ~ well, it turned chilly the instant the winds changed from the southeast to the northwest. Those special northerly winds. We were supposed to get rain, but all we got were a few sprinkles. Honestly, I think the 35 – 45 mph winds were just drying the drops faster than they could fall from the sky.
Temperatures dropped as the day went on today. By evening, the sky held that all-too familiar light gray hue. I think it’s still too early for snow, but I fear it won’t be long. Not yet ready to let go of denial, I just can’t bring myself to turn the heater on. I also denied hearing Darling Husbie and Abigail’s teeth chattering ~ it must be that pretty red, white and black woodpecker frantically searching for a tasty snack to stash for the winter, eh?
Husbie finally took matters into his own hands and lit the wood burning stove downstairs. I’ll quietly admit I’ve enjoyed the smell this evening as it blends with the smell of the homemade Albondigas soup simmering on the stove top. If you twist my arm just a little, I may admit it does feel cozy to have the chill removed from the room.
I need at least one more day of fairly warm weather ~ please?! I’ve got one peach-colored metal door left that needs painted [who paints their doors peach?]. We had a day last week that reached 74°, but the sustained 40 mph winds put the kibosh on any hope I had of completing that project.
We’re still busy ~ wrapping tasks up outside while starting to make lists of indoor tasks to keep us occupied while the snow’s flyin’.
Wishing you all abundant blessings during this wonderful season! ♥

Snow? Cold? On it’s way? Say it isn’t so…will it snow on your B-day coming up?
Time to snip and clip coupons that are coming your way. heheheh
I love the phone calls during your snow season. Matching up menus. awww Life is good, my Farmer J.
I could do without snow on my birthday! I can’t remember the first day it snowed last year, but I know there was snow on the ground on Halloween.
I enjoy our phone calls, too! I just put you in my pocket and carry you around with me and yak while we cook, clean, clip coupons…whatever. I’m looking forward to them again!
I miss you tons, dear friend!
