Best All-Around Country Woman Award

An award I will never receive.  As the seasons have been changing, I’ve been progressing through the book gifted to me by Darling Husbie, How To Shovel Manure.  You may recall the humorous similarities I shared about getting the garden in and how to tell you live on a farm.

Oh, you also may recall my sharing with you my desire of learning to live more off the land and not so much from the store shelves.

As we’ve entered the season of fall, we’ve entered the season of hunting.  I’ve learned there are two things these Nebraskans take very seriously ~ one is their football team…and the other is their hunting.

Appropriately, like a true Country Woman, Ms. Petersen shares with us how to be a helpmeet to our country husband during hunting season.  But first, she paints a hysterical ~ but true ~ mental image of the male persons having their primitive being brought forth.  She describes the distinct difference between the ‘City’ hunters and the ‘Country’ hunters.  Having witnessed Darling Husbie and a dear friend last hunting season, some mental images were actual memories…and quite comical!

Ms. Petersen also describes two different kind of country women ~ those who are worthy of the Best All-Around Country Woman Award, and those who are members of a larger club.

I have no desire to don my pink cap with the white fur and ear flaps and trek out into the sub-zero temperatures before the sun even rises.  Instead, I’m happy to remain behind ready with hot coffee and fresh muffins and a cued ‘atta boy,’ if need be.

Although I’ve become quite comfortable with the concept and phenomenon of sticking a seed in the ground and ending up with some really fabulous food, I have not grown in the ‘getting close with my meat source’ department.  My wardrobe doesn’t yet include a rubber apron and rubber gloves, and as much as I love and adore my Husbie, I will not be helping him skin…anything!  Shoot, I still have nightmares about that fish lookin’ at me!

So, no, I won’t be getting the Best All-Around Country Woman Award any time soon.  As Ms. Petersen says, “Somebody has to be among the runner up group.”  For now, I’m content as a member of the larger club!

I’m looking forward to more laughs as we approach winter ~ I’ve already got my supply of hot cocoa and blankie next to the book stand!
