Another Change of Season

Posted By on September 5, 2009

Since we’re beginning to experience another change of season here on the Farmstead, we figured it was time to make the header photo reflect more appropriately the happenings around here.

Darling Husbie and I spent Thursday in the large garden plot.  We had some monster tomato plants that needed thinned ~ actually, we entirely removed 29 plants so that we could even get to the remaining plants to harvest them.  We were excited to finally be able to get to the tomatoes.  Some not-so-ripe, some perfectly ripe and others overly ripe.  The overly ripe ones got tossed into the other rectangle plot to get turned back into the soil; the ripe Yellow Pears have been turned into a honeyed sauce which will be absolutely delicious with chicken and fish; the ripe Black Cherries are being eaten with tomato in one hand, salt shaker in the other; the ripe Arkansas Travelers will be transformed into slices for tomato sandwiches…yummmmm!  The green tomatoes are going to be turned into a Green Chili Sauce.  Waste not, want not.

Husbie decided to pick a couple of the monster Boston Marrow Squash we’re trying for the first time this year.  These two [in the header photo] are the little ones.  The one on the left weighs 22 lbs, the one on the right weighs 20 lbs.  There is one out there that is the size of a Volkswagen.  Oy!  Supposedly, these squash are famous for making better pumpkin pie than pumpkins.  I see a lot of pumpkin pies in my crystal ball.

The Yellow Summer Squash just won’t give up.  We have picked over 300 lbs of Yellow Summer Squash and Zucchini off of these plants.  Seriously.  I have the exact weights documented and I will write more about each one at a later time.

So, yes, it’s harvest season here at the Farmstead.  The bounty has been magnificent ~ praise the Lord for so many wonderful blessings!

  1. Farmer J,
Forgot to tell you about this-take one of the green tomatoes, chunk it up, and cook it in the okra recipe I sent. It adds a tartness to the eggs/okra/caraway seeds that, as the TV cooks say, makes a dish more interesting. Also, if you haven’t tried green fried tomatoes, give it a shot. They are tart and being transplanted Southerners (no offense meant), you might want to coat the slices with flour and desired seasonings and deep fry them. There are various recipes for this out there on the internet, I would think. Mark B.

  2. That sounds really good. We love scrambled eggs with a plethora of things tossed in for color and flavor ~ I’ll have to give it a whirl.

I haven’t tried fried green tomatoes. I think Darling Husbie has had them before, but I don’t know if he liked them.

Thank you for all the wonderful ideas to help us use up this produce. You know, you and Susan should make a trip over here to get a trunk load!
