Monopoly Money Madness: July
Posted By FarmerJ on August 8, 2009

Oh my word! I’m fully flabbergasted, completely confounded and sincerely stupefied by the fact that it’s August ~ and more than a week into it, no less! I knew it had been a while since I last posted, but I didn’t realize three weeks had gone by. Gracious!
Unfortunately, my Monopoly money totals just keep going down each month. Some of it is due to the fact that I just simply haven’t had time to sit and compare the local sale ads with available coupons. Or, some of it may be due to the fact that in the past six weeks, I’ve obtained the Sunday paper with the coupon inserts one time and I just don’t have the coupons to match with the good deals I do see.
Perhaps some of it may be that we are fairly well stocked on such a variety of things that I couldn’t cram another one in the cabinet or on the shelf if I wanted to ~ giving thanks to God for being blessed with that problem. And, some of it may be that coupons don’t exist for some of the items we’ve been purchasing as of late. Whatever the reason, the amount of Monopoly money I spent in July set an all-time record low for me since I became a Coupon Ninja a little over three years ago. How sad! Especially since just a few months ago I’d spent well over $200 in Monopoly money.
If that’s not enough to make a Coupon Ninja mad, then what I witnessed not once, but twice this week surely would. At one store I frequent regularly, I had purchased a particular item for $1. It wasn’t on sale, it was just $1. I picked up ten because I had ten coupons $10 in Monopoly money, making all of them free except for sales tax. Later in the week I had obtained some more Monopoly money for that item, so I scurried back to get a few more. Whoa! Never mind! That item is now priced at $2.18. Crazy.
This past Thursday I went to the other store I frequent regularly. I was in the dairy section picking up some butter on sale, and one of the employees I see all the time was changing the price stickers on some of the Land O’ Lakes ~ I didn’t pay too close attention to the actual product because I was in shock over what I was seeing…but I think it was the little whipped butter tubs. Up until Thursday, they had been priced at $1.68. Now? A whopping $2.99! Insane.
There are other items we purchase on a regular basis ~ being the creatures of habit that we are ~ and the price on most of them has increased as well. For a while, it seemed as though the inflation had sort of plateaued. But now it seems as though things are on the rise again. Is it just here, or have you noticed a similar pattern in your area?
So anyway, for the month of July we ring in with:
* Total Number of Items for Free = 16
* Total Number of Items for $.01 – .50 = 4
* Total Amount of Rebates = 0
July Monopoly Money Savings = $36.91
Year-to-Date Monopoly Money Savings = $881.31
Cha-ching! Well, maybe this month is only Cha-!
