Sweet Southern Comfort: Buttermilk Pie

Awwww…the sweetness of good ol’ southern comfort food!  Buttermilk Pie is one of those things that makes most people wrinkle their nose because of the name of it ~ like Tomato Soup Cake…the very best spice cake you will ever eat!

I was first introduce to this tastebud treasure years ago during a potluck gathering at work.  For me, though, I had tasted the pie first so there was no nose wrinkling action.  Just pure love and the immediate desire to obtain the recipe so that I could have it again.

Somehow in the whirlwind of my every-day meanderings, I’d forgotten about this delectable treat until my fellow hobby farm friend over at Ten Things Farm mentioned she had some buttermilk she needed to use up and was seeking new recipes.  I immediately thought of this pie ~ which, in turn, immediately reminded me of the sweet, sweet lady from Georgia I’d received this recipe from.  Funny how little blessings pop up when you’re expecting them the least.

Anyway, if you’re looking for something different, something extremely soothing to satisfy that sweet tooth, I highly recommend this amazing pie.  I’ve shared it with others who were at first skeptic, only to claim it’s now their favorite pie ever!  Give it a try, and then let me know how you like it.

Buttermilk Pie

  • 1 9″ Deep Dish Pie Shell (unbaked)
  • 1/4 cup Flour
  • 1/2 cup Butter (softened)
  • 1-3/4 cups Sugar
  • 3 Eggs
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla
  • 1/2 cup Buttermilk

Cream sugar and butter.  Add remaining ingredients one at a time.  Mix well.  Pour into pie shell.  Bake at 350° F for 45 minutes.  If your oven bakes hot, you may want to reduce heat to 325° F for 30 minutes.

It’s incredibly easy and insanely delicious and oh-so-comforting.  What could be better for our busy schedules these days?

Enjoy!

  1. Thanks so much, Farmer J! This sounds lovely, delicous, and extremely do-able on a hobby farm with hens! I could whip this up out of ‘nothing’, hee hee!

Tell me…not having tried this yet, would it be good with a drizzle of sugared fruit, our would that be too much? Just a-wonderin’….

    Hugs and thanks,

  2. Okay, now you’ve done it! Personally, I think a little drizzle, or even a dab, of sugared fruit would be fabulous on this pie. I’ve known people to add lemon to the filling before baking for additional flavor, but I’ve always just enjoyed the sweet ‘cream’ flavor. A slight drizzle of that fabulous homemade cherry syrup would be amazing, I’m sure!

You’ll have to let me know if you end up trying it ~ and, of course, if you like it!

  3. This looks incredible J- It is getting copied and pasted right into my all -time favs file
    Hugs & Prayers, Ella

  4. I do hope you and your Hubby enjoy the pie, Ella. Be sure to let me know your verdict if and when you give it a try!

Hugs and continued prayers for your entire family, Dear One.

  5. I am still reading through your archives. Buttermilk pie is one of our family favorites. No one here in Houston likes it or they have never heard of it. I am writing to tell you that our family sprinkles a little nutmeg over the top of the pie before baking it. It gives it a nice sprinkle of color and flavor.

  6. Oh, that does sound good! I will certainly give it a try the next time I bake one. Thanks for the suggestion, Kristy!
