Treasured Traditions

If there’s one simple pleasure in life that Darling Husbie and I like to enjoy together, it’s sipping on some delicious coffee with a splash of flavored creamer in the morning. It’s just always been that way.
Seven years ago, we started a tradition without realizing it at the time. Around Christmas time, we venture into a store together and pick out two Christmas mugs to enjoy our coffee from. Since we’re in the seventh year of our tradition, we now have a different Christmas mug for each day of the week! I know ~ it’s not something most people would get excited about…but remember, this is one of those simple pleasures.
So, last Wednesday while I was in town with Husbie, we stopped at my favorite store in Grand Island to peruse their selection. They had quite a variety ranging from normal coffee cups to giant soup bowl-size mugs. We selected the rather large mugs above as this year’s coffee vessel.
I think these mugs easily hold three normal cups of coffee! Usually, two normal cups is enough to get my generator started in the morning. With the temperatures being below zero lately, my survival instinct is to grab another cup of hot ‘something.’ So, in the morning that means coffee. Both times I’ve done that using one of these mugs, I think I’ve overloaded my generator. The lips go numb, the scalp starts tingling and the ticker really starts ticking. Since getting a bigger generator isn’t an option, I really should just try to remember that one 3-cup mug of java is enough, eh? [Private thought: I really hate it when my lips go numb ~ all sorts of bad things can happen. /End private thought]
Anyway, we continued to briefly browse the aisles in another section of the store and we spotted these pretty mugs. They are the same shape and size as the snowman mugs. Husbie made the executive decision to get these mugs, too. Our tradition was broken last year since we weren’t able to be together over the holidays, so Husbie bought these to make up for the year lost. He’s such a sweet, loving sentimentalist!
Even when Husbie spent his year-long summer vacation in the Sand Box, we were able to keep up with our tradition ~ well, mostly. Husbie took his two weeks of R&R in October, and on his way home his flight had a layover in Ireland. Knowing this was likely a once in a lifetime opportunity, he purchased two wonderful mugs in a gift shop at the airport and brought them home to me. Needless to say, those Ireland mugs are special to me…to us. So! It was good to get our Cardinal mugs and make up for that lost year.
What kind of treasured traditions do you have? We know you have something special you like to do at a certain time each year ~ are you willing to share it with us?
Geez, I hope the feeling in my lips comes back soon!

Love the Cardinal Mugs. What an awesome Christmas Tradition, so sweet.
